US Fidelis founder owes $1.7M to Missouri
Monday, July 11, 2011
ST. LOUIS (AP) — The state says a former owner of one of the nation’s top marketers of auto service contracts owes about $1.7 million in state personal income tax, fees and interest.
The details were revealed in a tax lien, which the Missouri Department of Revenue filed this month against US Fidelis founder Darain Atkinson.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Atkinson and his younger brother, Cory, are accused in an indictment unsealed last month of consumer fraud, stealing and illegally selling insurance.
US Fidelis operated out of the St. Louis suburb of Wentzville. It collapsed in 2009 amid consumer fraud allegations and filed for bankruptcy in March 2010.
Nathan Garrett, Darain Atkinson’s criminal-defense lawyer, said in a statement that there are ongoing efforts to “work through the myriad of issues before us.”
