Dear Editor:
I do not have an engineer's degree, but I am smart enough to know that if there are large amounts of snow north of Missouri and there is potential of heavy spring rains, there is a good chance of flooding.
That would suggest to me that water should be released from dams and reservoirs before it is too late. (Do we really need to maintain these dams and reservoirs to capacity anyway?)
Then when I hear Representatives Hartzler and Luetkemeyer say the Corps of Engineers is doing a good job, it makes me wonder just who are they representing. As a landowner in the flood plain it is not me.
I am still trying to figure out why someone made the decision to let the Corps attempt to control the Missouri River and decide when and where it should flood. I always thought God was the one in charge of that.
When I heard the Corps was blowing the Bird's Point Levee to save Cairo, Ill., it seemed that they were trying to play God. Why haven't they done the same thing to save all these other towns that have been flooded?
Perhaps it is time the Corps of Engineers stopped managing the rivers for recreation and all these environmental issues, and put their focus on how the rivers impact farmers lives, as well as the economic outlook of people not only close to the rivers but nationwide.
