4 people dead after boat capsizes in Niangua River

DALLAS, Mo. (AP) - Four Fair Grove residents are dead after a state conservation officer found their small boat capsized on the Niangua River in southwest Missouri.

The Missouri Highway Patrol's Water Patrol Division identifies the victims as 68-year-old David Dixon, 62-year-old Doyle Cowin, 43-year-old Hubert Highfill and 11-year-old Jesse Highfill.

The conservation officer was responding to a call for assistance around 10:30 p.m. Friday when he found Dixon clinging to the side of the capsized vessel.

Dixon was airlifted to a Springfield hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The other three victims were pronounced dead at the scene by the Dallas County coroner.

Investigators say the four were on the river for a fishing trip and had planned to return home that evening.
