PROVO, Utah (AP) - Jimmer Fredette scored 43 points and ninth-ranked BYU beat No. 4 San Diego State 71-58 before a frenzied crowd Wednesday night, handing the Aztecs their first defeat of the season.
The loss by SDSU (20-1, 5-1 Mountain West Conference) leaves No. 1 Ohio State as the only unbeaten team in the nation at 21-0.
BYU (20-1, 6-0) has won 10 straight, and six in a row at home against San Diego State.
The biggest regular-season basketball game in Mountain West history didn't disappoint. The first matchup of top-10 teams in the conference was tight from the start, with 15 lead changes and seven ties.
The Cougars trailed 31-30 at halftime thanks to a late 3-pointer by San Diego State's Kawhi Leonard.
But BYU, now alone atop the Mountain West, turned it on in the second half. With the score tied at 44, the Cougars went on a 16-8 run to take a 60-52 lead with 4:12 to go.
Leonard had 22 points to lead the Aztecs.
No. 7 Texas 61, Oklahoma State 46
STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) - Tristan Thompson scored all 14 of his points in the second half, Jordan Hamilton added 12 points and 11 rebounds and Texas beat Oklahoma State as the Cowboys marked the 10-year anniversary of a plane crash that killed 10 people with ties to the basketball program.
The Longhorns (17-3, 5-0 Big 12) wore the same orange "Remember the 10" T-shirts as Oklahoma State during warmups, then deployed the same stiff defense that has provided them a perfect start to conference play.
The Cowboys (14-6, 2-4) shot just 32 percent while being held to their lowest scoring output of the season and having a 13-game home winning streak snapped.
Marshall Moses had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead Oklahoma State, which held a reunion for families of the men killed in the crash and retired the No. 10 jersey during a halftime ceremony. The 10th anniversary of the crash of one of the team planes on the way back from a road game at Colorado is Thursday.
Families of eight of the 10 killed returned to Stillwater for the reunion, and former coach Eddie Sutton and three former players addressed the crowd at halftime.
Providence 83, No. 8 Villanova 68
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Marshon Brooks scored 20 points and Providence upset a ranked team for the second time in five days, beating Villanova.
The Friars had gone 51 weeks and 17 games without a Big East victory before beating No. 19 Louisville 72-67 on Saturday but now have won two straight conference games. They never trailed in this one and the Wildcats couldn't mount a serious comeback.
Providence (13-8, 2-6 Big East) led 34-25 at halftime and stretched the margin to as many as 18 points on a 3-pointer by Bryce Cotton that made the score 74-56 with 2:50 left.
Villanova (17-3, 5-2) was led by Maalik Wayns with 18 points and Antonio Pena with 17.
No. 16 Minnesota 81, Northwestern 70
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Blake Hoffarber scored 20 points while playing point guard in place of Al Nolen, Trevor Mbakwe rammed his way to 18 points and 14 rebounds, and Minnesota beat Northwestern.
Mbakwe got his 12th double-double of the season while matching his career high in points and moving back in the starting lineup for the first time in four games, helping the Gophers (16-4, 5-3 Big Ten) win their fourth straight despite the loss of their steady senior leader Nolen, who broke his right foot last weekend.
Colton Iverson added 15 points, Ralph Sampson III had 14 points and the Gophers started a parade to the free throw line for a season-high 46 attempts. They drew 32 fouls on the Wildcats (13-6, 3-6) and wore them out with hustle, muscle and decent passing.
Michael Thompson had 18 points for Northwestern.
No. 21 Georgetown 77, St. John's 52
WASHINGTON (AP) - Hollis Thompson responded to his benching with 15 points and six rebounds, and Georgetown returned home to a snowbound nation's capital with a win over St. John's.
Jason Clark added 16 points and Austin Freeman had 14 for the Hoyas (15-5, 4-4), who shot 51 percent to win their third straight and finally pull to .500 again in the Big East standings. The turnabout that started last week with wins at Rutgers and Seton Hall had a homecoming as emphatic as the two-handed, rim-hanging dunk by Thompson that pushed the lead to double digits for the first time late in the first half.
Justin Burrell had 12 points and eight rebounds for St. John's (11-8, 4-5), losers of five out of six after starting 3-0 in conference play.
No. 23 Louisville 55, West Virginia 54
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Peyton Siva hit a twisting layup with 4.5 seconds remaining to lift Louisville over undermanned West Virginia.
The sophomore point guard finished with 14 points as the Cardinals (16-4, 5-2 Big East) rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit to post their second down-to-the-wire victory in the last two weeks.
West Virginia's Dalton Pepper tried to answer Siva's shot, but his rushed 3-pointer was well off as the horn sounded.
Chris Smith led Louisville with 15 points, but it was defense that led the comeback.
The Mountaineers (13-6, 4-3), playing without suspended leading scorer Casey Mitchell, made just two field goals over the final 15 minutes. Joe Mazzulla led West Virginia with a career-high 18 points, all in the first half.
