Gov. Nixon proposes more employee reductions

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon is proposing to eliminate an additional 863 state employee positions.

Nixon outlined the employee cuts Wednesday as part of his budget for the 2012 fiscal year that starts July 1.

The cuts will drop Missouri’s full-time employee payroll to about 56,500 positions. The largest reductions will occur in the departments of Mental Health and Social Services. Nixon’s budget director says the administration hopes to privatize some of the jobs.

With the latest proposed cuts, Nixon says he will have reduced the state payroll by more than 3,300 positions since he took office in January 2009.
