Realizing it could change for various reasons, the Cole County Commission is aiming at an April 15 date to get the new county jail open for operation.

During a status report Thursday, Mike Smith with Septagon, the project manager for the jail, said he believed it was possible they could have all the inside work done around that time, but there would still be some outside work to be completed.

The commissioners said it was important to have a date because they are coming quickly on the time when things such as files and records must be moved from the current sheriff’s department and jail into the new facility at East High and Adams streets.

The new jail says a lot about this community's values when you look at the jail and then turn your head and look at that big ol' dump Simonsen. We really go the extra lengths to make sure criminals are comfortable, warm, and secure around here. Only the best for our criminals. As far as our children- Simonsen is just fine for them.

That jail needed to be redone decades ago. Its a complete dump. they had to remodel it to stop the lawsuits that would have been pending had they not and that would have cost the county MORE! There were some major civil rights violations going on there and only an outdated facility to blame. not to mention simonsen has turned into something WORSE than a prison in recent years. If those are our future leaders i am TRULY scared for the direction of this country. The officers deserved it more than any inmate ever will.
