Cole County Judge Jon Beetem sentenced a Fulton man to seven years in prison Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to the robbery of a Checker Cab driver in April 2010.

For a paper that can even blow headlines, the use of pleaded instead of plead could be considered way good. :)

Plead is present tense. The AP Stylebook prefers "pleaded" for past tense. Our own Jeff Haldiman has used "pled," which AP describes as colloquial. However, not only does "pled" sound more natural to many people, there also is ample legal and linguistic history.behind usage of it. I've yet to see any comments complaining about "pled." Nevertheless, "pleaded" is by no means incorrect and is used more often by the press. For more background on the issue, see cjr.org/resources/lc/pleadguilty.php. Hope that helps. --Rick Brown, online editor, News Tribune
