YOUR OPINION: Attacks on Christians

Dear Editor:

In the Dec. 26 issue, Pope Benedict urged Catholics to have courage in connection with all the bombings of Catholic churches.

First there was the attack on two churches in Nigeria by Muslim sect members which resulted in the deaths of six and 32 people, respectively. Then came shootings in Baghdad Cathedral and a bombing in a Philippine police chapel. Now we have a bombing at a Christian Church in Egypt that killed 51 people, with possible connections to Muslim hard-liners against Christians. This is not only an attack on Catholics, it is an attack by the enemies of Christ on all Christians and all Christianity.

Even in America, Christianity is being attacked in a more subtle way by the ACLU and some of the liberal press and progressives and socialists in our government.

When you bought or received Christmas cards this year, you may have noticed the words Merry Christmas were replaced with the greetings Happy Holidays or Joyous Wishes.

Also, the greetings on TV and newspapers from businesses to their customers and friends leave out the word Christ many times.

There was also a protest by someone in the news to call a Christmas tree a Holiday tree so that we would not offend a non-Christian.

The enemies of Christ in America and the world are out to destroy Christianity in the guise of political correctness. Yet if a progressive, socialist or even a communist wishes to speak to our youth on a college campus, they call it free speech.

When are we going to stand up and use the word Christ and Christianity in our daily lives and ask and receive the due respect we deserve just as we grant to other non-Christian religions?
