Trans-Alaska oil pipeline remains shut down

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - The trans-Alaska pipeline remained shut down Sunday more than 24 hours after a leak was discovered at a North Slope pump station.

Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. says the leak was discovered Saturday. It appears to be coming from a section of piping encased in concrete next to Pump Station 1 - the first pump station on the 800-mile pipeline.

There is no estimate of how much oil has been spilled. Tom DeRuyter with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation says the oil leaked into the station's booster pump building. In the meantime, North Slope production has been cut to 5 percent.

DeRuyter says four responders are on-scene. He says an estimated 90 percent of the oil has been removed and a small clean up operation is under way.
