KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) — Robert Garrigus made another strong recovery, holing a 50-foot eagle putt on the final hole for a 4-under 69 and a share of the third-round lead with Steve Stricker and Jonathan Byrd in the season-opening Tournament of Champions.
Stricker shot a 65, making it look easy in the toughest conditions of the week. Byrd had a 67.
Then came Garrigus, who opened with a double bogey and a bogey to fall out of the lead. He lingered the rest of the sunny day until the end, when his 50-foot putt banged into the back of the cup and fell for eagle.
The trio of Americans were at 18-under 201. An American has not won at Kapalua since 2001.
Carl Pettersson (71) was 15 under, and Matt Kuchar (66) was another stroke back.
EAST LONDON, South Africa (AP) — British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen shot a 4-under 69 for a share of the third-round lead in the Africa Open with Austria’s Markus Brier.
Brier shot a 70 to match Oosthuizen at 13-under 206. Defending champion Charl Schwartzel (68) was a stroke back along with Jbe’ Kruger (67), Manuel Quiros (68) and Jaco Van Zyl (70).
The tournament is sanctioned by the European and Sunshine tours.
