Sowers joins vets group after 8th District loss

An Iraq War veteran who lost his congressional challenge to Republican incumbent JoAnn Emerson of southeast Missouri has a new job as an advocate for other former soldiers.

Democrat Tommy Sowers (SOW'-urs) drew just 29 percent of the November vote in Missouri's 8th Congressional District despite a well-funded campaign that drew national attention.

The former Green Beret will remain in Missouri and work as a senior adviser for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

Sowers told supporters in an e-mail message titled "A New Mission" that he plans to complete his doctorate degree under the GI Bill while providing a voice for what he called "my generation's wars."

He didn't rule out a return to politics but said he plans to concentrate on his degree and advocacy work for now.
