COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - A Nobel Prize-winning chemist will speak Tuesday at a neuroscience symposium at the University of Missouri in Columbia.
Roger Y. Tsien shared the Nobel chemistry prize with two other scientists in 2008 for discovering and developing a fluorescent protein. Their work has helped researchers track such processes as the development of brain cells, the growth of tumors and the spread of cancer cells.
The symposium will focus on using brain research to develop new pharmaceutical, surgical and behavioral therapies to treat diseases.
The University of Missouri has a center devoted to such research. The researchers study not only age-related conditions, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, but also brain tumors and infectious diseases of the nervous system.
