AP sources: Gingrich closer to presidential run
Sunday, February 27, 2011
WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican officials say former House Speaker Newt Gingrich intends to take a formal step in the next two weeks toward a run for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.
He would be the first of many potential contenders to make the move to challenge President Barack Obama.
The former Georgia congressman has been travelling to key primary and caucus states in recent months in the run-up to a campaign for the White House.
The officials say an announcement is likely in the first half of March. It is not clear what type of declaration he intends to make. Some White House hopefuls set up exploratory committees, while others simply announce their candidacy.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to disclose Gingrich’s plans.

What a fine representative for the party of family values.

Gingrich-Palin 2012! Two of our most famous failed family values icons, and quitters at that.
tonto 2 years, 2 months ago
Baseless attacks? Putting a very young and obviously pregnant daughter on national television for political gain is a problem. The young lady might have liked a little privacy, but we'll never know that. Putting a Down's Syndrome baby on national television for political gain is a problem.
Palin put her family in the spotlight as soon as she got on the national stage because the GOP leadership needed a stable family image. They thought Palin walked the walk, and they didn't believe McCain could hold the family values voters. That bad decision will show up in the textbooks one day.
The rapid unraveling of the 2008 GOP presidential campaign closely paralled the coverage of the ongoing circus sideshow that Palin's family really is. Talking about family values was not enough. The family values voters stayed home.

So call me old fashioned. I agree that anyone that wants to run and can put the time and effort and money into it should have their chance. What I object to is using a candidate's rather sad children in that campaign. I believe children were sent to us to be cared for, nurtured, and raised so they can go on to live their own lives and I have a strong independent daughter to prove it. I do not believe in exploiting kids.

Palin quit. She was elected as governor by the Alaskan people and she quit mid term.
pegassuss2525 2 years, 2 months ago
She quit. How exactly is quitting the best? She quit on the Alaskan people. She chose to run for public office, then she quit/gave up before the job was finished for what? Why? If it was best for Alaska that she quit, then the US certainly doesn't need her. You can't sugar coat it - she quit!
pegassuss2525 2 years, 2 months ago
I don’t hate her. Never have. I don’t like her because she quit. She was elected to be the Governor for four years. The going got tough and she bailed. Many governors are attacked by the opposing parties’ national organizations. They don’t quit. They do their job for the time frame they are allowed to. A better opportunity came along so it’s fine to quit? Yes she’s making more money but her realty show and speaking engagements could have waited. She had a job to do by which she was elected by the people. She didn’t have to run for public office but she did. She quit once, she’ll do it again. As for your comment about letting go of the hate and anger…please take your own advice.
pegassuss2525 2 years, 2 months ago
What does this have to do with Palin and her quitting? You attacked me without basis. I simply stated a fact. She quit!
pegassuss2525 2 years, 2 months ago
I guess we will never know because she didn't have the guts to stick it out. She didn't even have a decent reason for doing so. She certainly is not the only politician to have been attacked and maligned. The fundamental difference between her and the rest, she quit.
pegassuss2525 2 years, 2 months ago
No she wasn't. She could have continued her term. She chose to quit.
pegassuss2525 2 years, 2 months ago
She was not harrassed anymore than any other polarizing person. The fact of the matter and the TRUTH is, she quit. She could have and should have finished her term, Many lost all respect for her once she quit. I actually thought that she would grow with experience and become a force to be reckon with. Now she's just a quiter. The truth does matter to me and the plain truth is she could have finished her term but didn't want to.
pegassuss2525 2 years, 2 months ago
You're the one who continues to argue the fact. My posts have always stated that she quit. Again, real mature with refusing to read posts. You do need to do that if you want to join in the discussion. My decision was made when she quit. What's to keep her from doing it again? You refuse to offer any reason why she should be given another chance.

Palin is simply dumb. Watch her present herself she comes off as an dummy. The way this country is with the dummies we elect I'm sure she will get her shot!
rmsberengaria 2 years, 2 months ago
HA probably reads the "NATION" magazine and lives and breathes the words of its editor Katrina vanden Heuvel. Now he probably loves her and her socialist ilk!
asb 2 years, 2 months ago
She isn't simply dumb, she's not even as dumb as the last republican president, but she's dumb with talented handlers. If she hadn't been drop-dead gorgeous at one time, she'd be a Wasilla coffee-klatch momma.
rmsberengaria 2 years, 2 months ago
If all the bleeding heart....Obama supporters do some fact checking the budget overall in two years under Obama has increased 25% average in all departments of discretionary spending! With our government borrowing, which pulls money out of the private sector economy to pay for this Byzantine Government money pit. Our interest rate on the open market for our government bonds is 2%, which is historically low. The average is 6%, I learned that a 1% jump in interest the government has to pay adds.....get this $600 billion in interest payments a year. Folks left or right you have to roll back spending to the 2008 spending level. If all of us realize that 25% less spending most of us will not even notice the difference but our deficit will at least shrink!

Tell me how Sarah did not benefit from affirmative action.
jdb 2 years, 2 months ago
You have implied that Obama benefited from affirmative action because he is Black. Last time I checked, Palin was a female. Using your logic, because Palin is female, she must have risen to her position as Governor of Alaska because of affirmative action.
pegassuss2525 2 years, 2 months ago
Him not releasing his transcripts doesn't mean that he was a charity case. It simply means he prefers to keep them private, like many people. It's your opinion that he talks nonsense. That's an opinion and doesn't mean that he got a free ride.
wcywing 2 years, 2 months ago
Please Newt, just stay home, don't run. you had your chances and you blew it. Ron Paul 2012.
rmsberengaria 2 years, 2 months ago
Graceful I agree. Newt is one of the most learned men in politics but to many misinformed or detractors he is unelectable. Probably one of the most qualified candidates is Mitt Romney but I fear he to is polarizing and somewhat dry for others, thus not electable. I would support him though.
tonto 2 years, 2 months ago
I agree with you all. Mitt Romney would be a great president if the GOP could get past that "scary Mormon religion" thing. His father was greatly respected in his day, before some people got so frightened about other people's church membership.
Newt, unfortunately, has a long list of ethical and moral shortcomiings that his opponents will exploit.
tonto 2 years, 2 months ago
Facts are facts. The GOP has changed since George Romney was a highly respected GOP leader. Mitt is the candidate who can appeal to the "big tent" out there and is having a tough time in the GOP because polling shows that his religion is a problem within the GOP.
If you understood healthcare finance you'd know that Romneycare saved the state and its citizens quite a bit of money. You're stuck at the bumper-sticker slogan level.
asb 2 years, 2 months ago
I can picture the first debate between Newt and Palin . . . this might be my new happy place!
wcywing 2 years, 2 months ago
i think Newt delusional or does Newt think there are enough delusional people that will vote for him. Ron Paul did win the straw poll at the CPAC convention, Trump never won an election. if Ron can't win i hope its Romney or Huckabee, the others are scary.

At this point in time President Obama is a shoe-in to be re-elected.
bluesfan13 2 years, 2 months ago
Why does Obama have a higher average approval rating than GW?
Liberal media polling?
rmsberengaria 2 years, 2 months ago
Who really cares GW is the ex President Bluesfan, we need to all be discussing to our politicians as to why we as a country are not addressing the price of GAS! We have an Energy Department, regardless of who created it, that has been around what 20 years or better and their stated aim was "to end our dependence on foreign oil" ! I think their target was 2000 for independence from the foreign oil! What have we got for billions and billions spend on this department NOTHING! All of us need to complain....left, right, in between, pink, green whatever hold the agency and the administration and the Congress accountable and get something done! Cut all the red tape and bureaucracy and onerous over bearing time consuming paper garbage and get it done! All of us know government in one way or the other is overbearing and wastes our money and time fiddling while we the people pay the price!
bluesfan13 2 years, 2 months ago
My point, rms, was that Graceful says "...most of America knows it", but yet Obama's approval rating is higher than our previous President, and higher than some before that too. Am I happy with everything Obama has "accomplished"? NO. However I would take Obama as President over some of the alternatives presented.
bluesfan13 2 years, 2 months ago
Did I say I was happy?
bluesfan13 2 years, 2 months ago
Oh, and "utter failure" is a stretch. Take a look at TARP. Yes, I hated the idea of taxpayers bailing out corporate America, but the financial industry has been more or less stabilized, and the net cost to taxpayers is...wait for it...less than $5 billion, compared to the $300 billion that some extremists were saying it was going to cost. Yes, $245 billion was given out, but about $240 billion of that has been repaid as of last month. If we don't watch it, TARP might actually MAKE the government money when all the stock is sold.

This is a good start! However I don't think Gingrich will appeal to the tin foil hat crowd like Palin or Bachmann would.
tonto 2 years, 2 months ago
Like I said above, Gingrich-Palin. Let's see if the Koch brothers' Tea Party will fund that.
TheRickster 2 years, 2 months ago
I will take all bets against him or Palin winning the presidential election! Graceful,, for what you know is wrong. Our president now WAS elected by the people. What don't you understand? Just because some money hungry GOP's have the time and cash to bash him,, we have to believe that nobody likes him or his ideas?? He ran on Healthcare Reform,,and won. Tell me why should we now fight against what the MAJORITY voted for? All senators have full medical,, why not shave their benefits down to our level? Or bring us to their level? I would be happy for either of those. I will never understand how we are supposed to cut,, cut,, cut and they get automatic raises with full medical and dental!! Don't answer that with your mouth full!
pegassuss2525 2 years, 2 months ago
Affimative Action may have played a part in minorities and women getting into college but it has nothing to do with what happens once they get there. Unless you are stating that affirmative action had something to do with him being elected President.
jdb 2 years, 2 months ago
By the same token, you could substitute the name Palin for the name, Obama.
jdb 2 years, 2 months ago
Byron, you are too funny. Here is her political experience. Palin was on the city council for four years. She was a mayor of a town of 6,000 people for six years. She spent 32 months as governor for state which has a population of less than 700,000.
And how much of her time as governor was spent politicking for national office? That sounds like qualified experience to be Vice President?
Oh but let us not forget the two years she spent as chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. Just how does that make her qualified to be a national leader?
The most ironic part of your post is your request for me to open my mind. Perhaps irony is a poor choice for a descriptor. Hypocritical is more appropriate.
jdb 2 years, 2 months ago
Despite your interpretations of my posts, I am not defending Obama. My point is Palin was nothing but window dressing for the Republican party in 2008.
I will play your silly games and rebut your claim about Obama never working a real job. I will have to concede that point to you. Obama, an attorney, taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago for twelve years. You are right, he never has had a real job.
pegassuss2525 2 years, 2 months ago
Palin has absolutely no Foreigh policy experience. Her rationalization that she does because she can see Russia from her house quite frankly scares me. I do not agree with your opinion that Obama has no common sense. However, that could be said about almost any politician.
pegassuss2525 2 years, 2 months ago
I did paraphase but she basically did say it. SNL simply made fun of it. Obama may not have had a lot of foreign policy experience but he had quite a bit more than Palin. I believe that they both know the US has enemies. Some real and some imagined. huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/25/palin-talks-russia-with-k_n_129318.html and abcnews.go.com/politics/vote2008/Story?id=5782924&page=2

Graceful, you are the one who wants proof. I've included proof and you choose to ignore it. This proof is in transcript and video proof. Since you choose to ignore the proof when given, you can no longer use that as an excuse in responding. Thank you,
pegassuss2525 2 years, 2 months ago
I said I paraphased. She stated that she could see Russia from Alaska and rationized that because of that she had foreign policy experience. Again, you didn't read what was posted. I accept reality. I'm living in reality. The words are coming out of her mouth in her voice. If you don't understand the use of the word paraphase, feel free to look it up in Websters.
jdb 2 years, 2 months ago
Graceful, If Palin had done what was best for her family and Alaska, she never would have run for governor in the first place.
pegassuss2525 2 years, 2 months ago
Where? You ddn't site any information. Prove it.
jdb 2 years, 2 months ago
Not that I consider Wikipedia to be a reliable source, but they have an interesting read on Sarah. Seems to me some of the pork barrel projects Alaska received under her watch are exactly what Tea Party advocates oppose. And I use the term "her watch" loosely. How much of her time in the governors office was spent state campaigning for Vice President?
Daddy 2 years, 2 months ago
Again she is simply dumb! LOL!

We've reached the end of the line for commenting on this page. Given some of the bickering that's taken place here, let me reiterate the purpose of this forum so all can put it into practice. This is intended to be a platform for readers of these articles so that they can address the same potential audience as the original article reached. You now have a platform to express your views on the issues, not just read the reporter's accounts passively. It's designed to elevate your voice. Any interaction between participants here is incredibly valuable to everyone -- participant and non-participating reader alike -- when it illuminates or contrasts the issue-oriented opinions being shared in a civil fashion. However, once the interaction deteriorates into bickering and repetitiveness over multiple posts, it ceases to have much value to anyone but the two parties engaged in the bickering. That's the point to stop the bickering because it's ventured beyond the scope of the forum and threatens to monopolize the forum to the detriment of others. At that point, it's best to agree to disagree and move on. This forum has its highest value to the most people when it's used as a stage to address everyone who might be reading it, and has its least value when it digresses into a non-stop personal boxing match between a couple of individuals. Thanks. --Rick Brown, online editor, News Tribune
