Lady Jays drop finale to Parkview

The second season starts Wednesday for the Jefferson City Lady Jays.

After four straight losses, they're ready to close the book on the first season and move on to the district tournament.

"We don't get any re-dos, it is what it is," Lady Jays coach Meyer said after Jefferson City dropped a 69-64 decision Friday night to the Parkview Lady Vikings at Fleming Fieldhouse to close the regular season. "We're still in the district tournament, we still get to play Hickman on Wednesday. That hasn't been taken away from us.

"We have things still in front of us, but we can't say that if we lose Wednesday. We have to have a sense of urgency."

The four losses have come after Jefferson City (15-9) rattled off 10 straight victories.

"We've shown the ability to be a good ballclub," Meyer said. "We just need to pry it back out and keep it out."

The Lady Jays looked like a good ballclub for much of the first half Friday. Jefferson City held Parkview scoreless for the final 5:30 of the first quarter and led 17-6 after one period. The Lady Jays maintained that double-digit advantage for much of the second quarter and took a 34-27 advantage into halftime.

A 3-pointer by Sadie Theroff on the opening possession of the third quarter pushed Jefferson City's lead back to 10. But then the wheels started to come off as Parkview went to a zone and Jefferson City started to settle for 3-point shots.

"We had an advantage attacking off the dribble, you saw that in the first half," Meyer said. "In the second half, we were taking too many shots early in the possession."

The Lady Vikings got as close as two points in the third quarter before a Kristin Burnett layup gave the Lady Jays a 44-40 lead heading into the final period.

Another layup by Burnett, after Amanda Brenneke made a great save to keep the ball from going out of bounds, made it 46-40 in the opening :30 of the fourth quarter. But Parkview then went on a 19-5 run over the next five minutes to take the lead for good.

The Lady Vikings led by as many as 10 points, that coming at 67-57 with :35 left. A pair of 3s by Lauren Coons helped the Lady Jays get back to within five as time wound down.

"We hung in there, we had a chance to get it to one possession," Meyer said.

Parkview, which went into the bonus at the free-throw line in the final minute of the third quarter, finished 17-of-24 at the charity stripe in the fourth period.
