House panel backs English-only driving tests

A bill requiring all driving tests in Missouri to be given only in English has advanced in a House committee.

Tuesday’s 8-3 vote in the House Transportation Committee sends the measure to the Rules Committee, which must approve it before it can go to the full House.

Missouri currently offers driver’s license tests in 11 languages besides English. The state also allows people taking the test to have a translator.

The English-only bill is a priority of House Speaker Steve Tilley, a Republican from Perryville.

The measure would require anyone seeking a driver’s license to take the test in English, either in written form or by having someone read it aloud.
