Cardinals great Musial to receive medal from Obama

WASHINGTON (AP) - Hall of Fame baseball player Stan Musical is being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom this week in Washington.

The St. Louis Cardinals outfielder and first baseman will receive the medal from President Barack Obama Tuesday in a ceremony at the White House. The White House announced that Musial had won the award in November.

Musial was named the most valuable player three times and played in 24 All-Star Games in his career. He also acted as an unofficial American emissary to Poland and has worked closely with several charities.

In a letter to Obama last year, U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill said the 90-year-old Musial deserves the award and called him "an American hero."
