Your Opinion: Health care law offers safeguards

Dear Editor:

I was stunned by Sonjia Grotewiel's rage at the health care reform and her attack on our senator who did not vote to rescind it. I am very happy that health care reform stands.

I have no doubt that she either has no insurance worries or no need for health care yet. I do not believe that our economy, individual policy holders, or company paid insurance plans can sustain insurance increases of 20 percent per year forever. Republicans would not participate in writing reform but now they want to rescind the entire bill and make us think they will offer a few dinky changes. Mostly they are pandering to the radical anti-Obama element.

When asked about the individual parts of health care reform, most Americans approve of it. No doubt their goal is to safeguard the position of the health care complex including insurance companies, drug companies, hospitals and doctors. They do not want their gravy train to stop.

Those of us who pay our own insurance have ever higher rates while decreasing coverage so we can afford minimal coverage.

That leaves a large amount of deductible to pay. At least now insurance companies cannot withdraw coverage when someone gets sick. Adult children can stay on their parent's policy until they are 26 safeguarding health care for a large group of people.

Grotewiel and Republicans would let us die on the sidewalk in front of the hospital because we cannot afford the high cost of health care. People who are snug in their insurance coverage will see the day when they cannot get or afford health care if the current trend continues. Fortunately, a few politicians such as Sen. McCaskill have concern and foresight to change the situation.

Grotewiel should not get her hopes for the Supreme Court to declare health care reform unconstitutional. The interstate commerce clause of the Constitution will almost certainly protect us from the rage of the self absorbed. Perhaps she should read the Constitution. Maybe she thinks Social Security, Medicare, workman's compensation and the FDIC are also unconstitutional.
