GOP lawmakers propose health care "compact'

Missouri Republicans this week launched another effort to protect "the rights of Missouri and other ... states to establish our own health care system, without the intrusion of the federal government," Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Springfield, announced Tuesday.

He said 51 other GOP representatives - including Mid-Missourians Jay Barnes, Jefferson City; Jeanie Riddle, Mokane; and Rodney Schad, Versailles - co-signed the bill.

"It is important to note that this compact ... is not health care reform - it is governance reform," Burlison told reporters at a 10-minute Capitol news conference. "This compact that we filed ... says that the legislatures of the member-states have the primary responsibility to regulate health care in their respective states."
