Husband of Missouri leader resigns over conflict

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The husband of a Jackson County legislator is leaving his job with an agency that receives public funding after concerns were raised that his position would pose a conflict of interest for his wife.

Theresa Garza Ruiz said in a news release Monday that her husband, Genaro Ruiz, submitted his resignation Friday to Guadalupe Education Services. He had been hired as Workforce Development/Operations Director.

She says her husband made the "difficult decision" to step down because he was concerned for the community Guadalupe serves.

She said she is now proposing that the legislature immediately release money originally designated for programs administered by the Guadalupe Centers to the agency.

Ruiz serves on a panel that allocates money to the center.

The Guadalupe Center said in a statement that it regretted the loss.
