Day of picking cotton helped shape mayoral candidate's future

Jefferson City mayoral candidate George Hartsfield knows about hard work. While he's not afraid of it, Hartsfield figured out at an early age that there were certain jobs that he preferred over others.

Growing up as the youngest of eight children in Missouri's Bootheel in Dunklin County, Hartsfield said he was exposed to manual labor tasks including working on the family farm and his brother's road construction crew. But there is one day's worth of picking cotton with his mother that will always stick in Hartsfield's mind.
