YOUR OPINION: Lodging tax increase would promote progress

Dear Editor:

I want to state some facts about the proposed lodging tax increase that will fund a new conference center in our central business district.

First, this modest increase that puts us generally in line with other communities our size will have absolutely no negative effect on whether meetings and events come to Jefferson City.

In fact, the opposite is true. A modern, appropriately sized center (and a privately funded hotel) so close to the most beautiful capital in the nation will, in fact, dramatically increase the number of people wanting to come to Jefferson City. Research has shown that there are dozens of associations and other groups who would come here if they could, but they can not - only because we do not have a facility large enough to hold them!

Second, it is those new visitors, not us, who will actually fund the new center since they pay the tax. New larger events in town will mean more customers in our restaurants, shops, and even in the other hotels. We should stop sending those visitors away and accept the economic benefits they bring.

On Tuesday we have the chance to take a giant step toward a project we've been talking about for forty years. A vote for Proposition A is a vote for solid progress and a great investment in the future of Jefferson City.
