Snow can create roof problems

Homeowners are advised to watch for leaks as rooftop snow begins to melt, according to local building contractors.

Ice dams on roofs are likely to create the biggest headache for homeowners, according to both Don Herzing, owner of Herzing Roofing, and Steve Brandt, owner of Ken Otke Construction.

Both men agree daytime warming followed by frigid temperatures may create ice dams on roofs or in gutters. An ice dam impedes the normal flow of water into gutters and downspouts, and instead pushes water back under roof soffits and shingles, creating leaks.

Herzing urges residents to avoid risking injury by climbing onto snow- and ice-covered roofs. In addition, he points out the use of shovels, picks or other implements could damage shingles and create added problems.

He encourages homeowners to watch for an unusual build-up of icicles on gutters that could indicate melting snow is not draining properly.

"If homeowners attempt to clear around the downspout area, I urge them to be very careful," he said.
