Wind-fed fire destroys church in NW Missouri town

CLEARMONT, Mo. (AP) - Officials in a northwest Missouri town say strong north winds caused a fire at a church to burn so quickly that firefighters were powerless to save it.

Nodaway County Sheriff's Deputy Jamie Vicker says the blaze at the Baptist Church in the small town of Clearmont was reported around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday and was out of control by the time fire crews arrived.

The St. Joseph News-Press reports firefighters got to the scene quickly despite a powerful winter storm because the building is only a few blocks from the fire station.

The Rev. Don Barnett says he'll hold services for his roughly 60 parishioners at the town's community building Sunday.

Vicker says the fire may have been sparked by some heaters in the church.
