Your Opinion: Local Toastmasters face changes

Dear Editor:

As the year 2011 comes to a close a longstanding tradition in Jefferson City is as well - Capital Toastmasters home at Missouri River Regional Library.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us there is a season for everything under heaven. Capital Toastmasters 503 is part of Toastmasters International which formed in 1924 and is also known as the organization "Where Leaders are Made."

A group of men chartered Capital Club 503 in the summer of 1947 to help others grow as speakers and leaders. Since then many people from different backgrounds have gathered weekly to help each other improve their communication skills

For over 30 years our home has been the Missouri River Regional Library meeting room. Men and women from all walks of life have grown into self-confident communicators and leaders in our community. In our history there have been many milestones from the first prison Toastmasters Club in the world, to people who could not speak on their feet, to those who improved their English as a second language.

That season has come to an end. The last presentation will be delivered, the last club meeting adjourned, the lights turned off for the last time by Capital Toastmasters at the library meeting room. Sad feelings will be felt. As we walk out that last evening each of us will reflect on the people we met, the growth not only in ourselves but for others. We have memories that will last a lifetime. We say thank you to all the wonderful library staff who have made us feel very welcome over the years.

Though that welcome by some has been extinguished we are excited that we will still meet on Monday evenings in a new location, start a new season and continue building leaders and communicators for the future,

Looking to the next season of our history with fond memories of our seasons at the library because when one door closes another opens for us. In this there is the promise of a new day.
