Your Opinion: Vandals damage holiday decor

Dear Editor: I never thought I would ever have to write this. I, like many in Jefferson City, entered the Christmas lighting contest. I have done so now for three years. I enjoy doing it even though it takes a lot of work, time and expense. Like others, I get the occasional mischief done to my display late in the night. Not vandalism but mischief. Items moved around, etc.

However, last night there was vandalism. Snowflakes, characters and deer broken. A blowup that my college-age son gave me as an early Christmas present this year was ripped apart.

This action hurt me deeply. It makes me wonder why decorate the yard for Christmas when others are going to ruin it.

In conversation with another person last week who entered the contest across town, she indicated that vandals had ripped up her display and put it in a pile on her lawn. I felt fortunate at the time that my display only had some mischief done to it. Spoken too soon.

I, like others, enjoy driving by and looking at those who decorate their yards. I appreciate their efforts. I have to admit though that I am presently discouraged from doing so again at this time. I know that the newspaper even editorialized that people should enter the contest if possible, but why, if the hard work, expense and effort is going to be for naught and ruined by a few.

Parents, do you know what your kids are doing?
