KC mayor ready to push school plan

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Mayor Sly James says he plans to go to Jefferson City to push his plan calling for the mayor to control Kansas City's public schools.

James announced his decision to push the plan with legislators on Wednesday night, saying it was the best way to help ensure a Kansas City school district survives.

The Kansas City Star (http://bit.ly/t7HbTw) reports that James wants the authority to appoint top executives to run the district, including a chief executive officer, chief academic officer and chief business officer. His plan would also include an appointed advisory board and eliminate the elected school board.

The mayor's decision to push the plan in Jefferson City surprised some at the gathering Wednesday who expected more discussion throughout the community before the mayor set his course
