Firefighters battle blaze in St. Thomas

Firefighters battled a blaze in a residence in St. Thomas early Friday.

Cole County Fire Protection District volunteers were dispatched around 2:47 a.m. to a report of fire in a structure at 309 Fowler Street.

Flames were showing through the roof and the rear of the structure when firefighters first arrived at 2:56 a.m.

Osage Fire Protection District volunteers were called out shortly thereafter to help with getting water tankers to the scene.

The homeowner and her son were sleeping inside when the fire broke out, but were able to get out of the home.

The fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes.

The home is considered a total loss.

The local chapter of the Red Cross was called to help with the family's needs.

The cause of the fire is listed as undetermined, but fire officials said there was nothing suspicious about the fire.
