reporters, odd number highways (hwy179) run north-south and even number highways (hwy54) run east-west. Please, reporters and editor, get your basic information correct as I must consider that if such basic information is not correct then what else in the article is also not correct.

Rodinman, I would point out that we didn't refer to Highway 54 North, we said the driver was turning onto northbound 54. Traffic on that section of 54 is northbound, just as traffic on 179 is east or westbound on 179. Further, the Jefferson City Police Department statement referred to eastbound Highway 179 and northbound Highway 54.
Here's what the police narrative says: On 12-22-2011 at 0629 hours officers responded to the Highway 179/54 overpass for an injury accident. Vehicle 1 was turning left from eastbound Highway 179 to northbound Highway 54 when its passenger side was struck by Vehicle 2 which was traveling westbound on Highway 179. Vehicle 2 came to rest on its driver side in the intersection. Driver 2 was transported to Capital Region Medical Center and was not wearing his seatbelt. Driver 1 was wearing her seatbelt and reported no injuries.
We believe the story to be accurate.

Most of us aren't looking at a compass while driving. Please call the roads by their correct overall directionl No highways in this area continue in cardinal directions exclusively.

I agree with rodinman...the police have it wrong, if they referred to these highways in this manner. It is confusing for us to have "directions" the cars were traveling used in this context. If they are referring to passage on a highway, they should use the proper directional reference for the highway. Yes, your story was accurate as it quoted the report, but the report is not correct. Should the say southeastbound, northwestbound, etc., etc., in their reports???

I'm with the paper on this one. If you're traveling west, you're traveling west; regardless of what a sign says. To say otherwise would be inaccurate.

54 is an east/west route. 179 is a north/south route.
People in this town have poor education.
