Westside annexation plan proceeds
Friday, December 16, 2011
The Jefferson City Council’s Annexation Committee has accepted a plan by city staff to move forward on an annexation proposal on the western side of the city.
Following the committee’s Thursday meeting, the staff will now work on a plan of intent to bring to the full council involving an area of 158.2 acres in the Apache Flats area, which includes 27 housing units and two hotels. Included in the area are the Hampton Inn, Comfort Suites, J.C. Mattress Factory, a quarry, a turtle farm and the Meadows by the Club subdivision.
Also at Thursday’s meeting, Nickolaus said they are very close to a settlement with St. Martins regarding annexation issues.

Bring them into the city! They are reaping the benefit of the city. Rob
Festus_Hagen 1 year, 6 months ago
Really ? What "benefits" are they "reaping" ? Being away from a crooked city administration ? Don't you think they built outside of the city to get away from all the political parades we have going on here ? Please... this is nothing more than stealing the hotels in Apache Flats. Hopefully people will build in St. Martins from now on so they won't be taken hostage as fast . This is pure BS. Take Westview Heights too since they are "reaping all the benefits" as well. Why not take that ?Please let me know the answer I already know ....

I agree with Festus. This is nothing but a takeover by Jefferson City to gain more revenue by the crooked political people in office. I guess Rob will also vote for the sales tax coming up. Another ripoff of the citizens by the city.

The services of the City of Jefferson, if one of those hotels has a problem who is on their way? The people who are staying at these locations are not in Apache Flats for something they are going back to Jefferson City? Jefferson City should be annexing like KC did. If you want to be part of the community be part of it! You are using services from Police, street, ect. Why dont you do you shopping at St Martins? These hotels were built in the locations near ther City limits, and they should be part of Jefferson City. Rob

How about the businesses along 54 West and those subdivisions/neighborhoods all around the outskirts of JC? Heck, why not annex all of Cole County?
bluesfan13 1 year, 6 months ago
So Rob, do you also believe that St. Martins, Wardsville, and Taos give up their town charters and be annexed by Jefferson City as well?
RobHunterJohnson 1 year, 6 months ago
You bet I will! We have to pay for what we get, they need to manage at every level and the people need to make politicians spend it correctly. I just paid my Cole Co taxes this week and have driven on a county road in Cole Co. twice since Labor Day? Do you think I am getting my monies worth? How many times have Festus or Black driven in Jefferson City since Labor Day? There is a growing group of people who do not want to pay for nothing, and recieve all the benefits for free! They will wake up when it is gone or their children will pay for it later. We do not have to build more, but we do have to maintain what we have. To do that takes taxes, everyone pays, I do not want to pay a dime more than I have too, but again we all have to pay for what we get. Rob
Gotigers 1 year, 6 months ago
Rob-- I am assuming that by "Cole County taxes" you are referring to our property taxes that we pay to the County tax collector. If so, please look at the break out of fees. Cole County roads get very little of that payment. Almost 75% of the payment goes to JC School District.

I drive in Springfield 3 times a year, does that mean I should pay Springfield (or Greene County) taxes even though I live in Jeff.?
BLACKDD 1 year, 6 months ago
@Rob. The new sales tax is not being used by the city government but by the Chamber of Commerce for their pet projects. I didn't see any mention of it being used for roads and Jefferson City has a lot of roads that need repair.
JCLifer 1 year, 6 months ago
Why give our public tax dollars to the private organization Chamber of Commerce? Maybe the Rotary Club could do a better job?
Was this bid out properly?
Better yet, use the money at City Hall and fix our crumbling roads, parks, and trim the weeds and brush, fix all the stormwater problems, fix the sewer smell in my neighborhood every time it rains, etc.
BLACKDD 1 year, 6 months ago
@Rob. And I drive the roads in Jefferson City everyday.

If jc is so great, people would be moving over here in droves. If JC want revenue it should be business friendly and youth friendly; its not btw

Once upon a time, The City of Jefferson was a "good" neighbor, to those living outside of the city limits. As time has passed, the City of Jefferson has become more of a Bully, taking whatever it wants through "Annexation" and giving little in return. Those living outside the city limits, support the city, every day, buy purchasing goods and services form local businesses. The city would be in dire straights without the tax dollars paid daily, by those who live outside the city limits. So please, don't say that we want the benefits without paying for them. We pay for the so called "benefits", every day.

Look at the promises Cedar City got by Jefferson City in 1989 when they were annexed. Not one promise was fulfilled by Jefferson City. Then 1993 and the flood came and after the waters went down Jefferson City evacuated the town and used the area for themselves and turned it into a park. What benefits did the people of Cedar City get? None.
RobHunterJohnson 1 year, 6 months ago
I think private developers should develop the convention center! There should have been a boat, and those hotels need to be annexed. Rob
RobHunterJohnson 1 year, 6 months ago
BlackDD there was nothing left of Cedar City? They bought them out? or did they? What were they suppose to do with it? How about a BOAT? We voted it in, they took 2 votes to sink it. When I moved back here 77, they wanted to fill the west capital area with 14' of fill, box the Weirs creek in? Urban renewed from 50 to the river and from Bolivar to Broadway. There was to be a convention center somewhere in that? They have moved on and tore the Bassman and other homes down for a convention center? Cedar and the Weirs creek area floods occasionly. If they stick a block in at Broadway the water will go further up 50? With that, is where planning comes from, and that is where we keep these politicians in check? MSP site, private developer, across the river Gambling Boat private developer. I just paid a sales tax at the dept of revenue this morning and was asked if I live in JC or Cole? There must be a difference? There is a growing group of people who do not want to pay. I am watching them try to dismantle SS and Medicare. How many of you are recieving benifits? I have what seems to me to be a small fortune invested in SS, I look at these Tea Party people (capital picture a couple of months ago News Tribune) and they look like they are of the SS age? They also do not want to pay taxes? Ron Paul wants to let the states take care of Medicare? Vickie Hartzler and husband took $775,000. in farm subsidy? (Google it Saywer/Hartzler these politicians are the problem) That is more than I have made in my entire career (2009)! It seems to me these tea party people have theirs and dont want to even pay for services we need! If there was a problem at these hotels who would be there first? I am 54 years old and I will continue to read these blogs with amazement! Never been to the boat, but I have driven by. Rob
Gotigers 1 year, 6 months ago
Rob- you make educated points, but I would like to add something for you to consider. I don't feel the Tea Party people don't want to pay, I feel they 'don't want their money WASTED on ridiculous projects.' Please consider this; 1) We are paying an ambulance tax right now and the city doesn't run an ambulance service. #2) a sales tax is being collected for a convention center and we don't even have an idea of where one should go. That is my contention--I would vote for the tax if I felt that the money would benefit us and not be wasted. Unfortunately, Their past history indicates that they will waste the money. Your thoughts?
Gabrielle 1 year, 6 months ago
RobHunterJohnson: you are not the first here to post something about the teaparty 'dismantle SS and Medicare'. I have listened/read enough of this nonsense. People are working to keep the promise of SS and Medicare. Listen carefully and you will be amazed at how caring people really are.
I don't know about Saywer - what I know about Vickie Hartzler and her husband RECEIVING farm subsidies is that it is the law. They are law abiding citizens. Now if people think this law is wrong - then consider doing something about it - like changing the law. It is work to do this and it is possible.

The city's spending habits are similar to MODOT's. Wasteful. Unfortunately,I feel the current leadership of Jefferson City, doesn't look at the total, and long term, good of the community.

RYAN / KOCH BROTHERS / MEDICARE If you are drawing it protect it , raise the limit, I have made the limit twice in my career. 27,000 and 35,000 (82 83)
RobHunterJohnson 1 year, 6 months ago
The Fire truck roll from the area stations, 3 firemen on the truck and they can do anything needed in the field? Then the ambulance arrives, been to my mothers 3 times in the last couple of years the system works, why not at those hotels? Rob
RobHunterJohnson 1 year, 6 months ago
I have stated my position on the convention center. If they tax something they need to spend it wisely, or the people need to vote them out. Graceful a Ponzi scheme is a fraudulent Investment. It is an investment that I had no choice in the last 39 years, I trust in the USA to do me right. Reagan made this right back in the 80s, by raising the limit, and our Congress who cannot get anything done these days needs to fix this. "Just like they Fix things down on the Farm". I unlike you who blame Obama for everything, the only thing he can do is sign or veto? Our Congress continue to fail us, as far as I am concerned they are after my Social Security, and Medicare neither of which I am recieving. I did not sign a pledge to Norquist and anyone who did needs to be voted out because they are the problem! Raise the limit! Rob

Hey Ron FYI...those hotels on west end call the County Services when needed, be it medical, cops whatever. When they call, it's not the JC services that answer...it's the county people who respond to the problem.

seems alittle funny how people in the city say that people living in the county get something for nothing. Last time i checked i pay sales tax when i buy things in the city. i pay a gas tax in the city. my personal property taxes and real estate taxes have ALOT of money going to the city's public school system. Not to mention the fact that i pay 3x's as much for my utilities as the people in the city does. Then they say we would get so much more out of becoming for of the city. I would like to know what? I already have law enforcement, fire protection and trash service( and by the way i'm not forced to recycle and pay for it). THe way I see it all I would get out of it is about $1000.00 more dollars a year in taxes. So where is the win/win situation here? IF you figure it out please let me know.

Just a couple points of taxation clarification. (Not debating any position.) The Jefferson City School District is its own entity within Cole and Callaway counties, separate from city or county government. Also, there is no separately levied city or county gas tax per se. Cities and counties each get their own constitutionally-established percentages of the state gas tax no matter where you purchase your fuel, and it's divvied up statewide based on population for cities and road mileage for counties. --Rick Brown, online editor, News Tribune

sickandtired: I would like to learn more about city/county rates. Soooo - a few questions:
for which utilities do you pay 3x as much as people in the city? I remember reading the city council was thinking about raising sewer. Is it a fact now? Are there other utiities you pay 3x for?
Also, seems i recall reading or conversing with someone who waid their county trash cost was a better rate than the city rate. Is that the case?
thanks.

Petunia at the present time people that live in the county pay 3x as much for sewer as people that live in the city. They are talking about increasing it to 4x the amount as what the city pay for sewer but have mentioned that if people will agree to support annexation they will not raise sewer cost. rite now i pay approx $45,00 per month for sewer and if they raise it will raise it to approx $60.oo/month. that comes to a total of approx $180.00 more per year in sewer costs. In comparison to the approx $1000.00 in increased taxes per year i'll take the higher sewer costs. As for the trash my understanding is yes county is alittle cheaper and we are not forced to pay for a second dumpster to recycle. We also have the choice of going with midstate waste or going with a company out of eldon that is a few dollars cheaper than midstate waste, does not charge the wonderful gas surcharge and gives discounts to people like veterns. the last time i checked midstate waste doesn't do that.So as you can see county is better of staying in the county.

Can you folks in the proposed area sing 'Roundabout' ?

i have no faith in the JC council, annex some hotels, a turtle farm, etc for some extra revenue. make it more business friendly for small businesses. as for a convention center, who in there right mind will come here? when there is columbia, st. louis, chicago, kansas city, etc.
