Man gets 30 years for killing son's stepfather

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) - An Independence man was sentenced to 30 years in prison for killing his son's stepfather.

Larry K. Wilson claimed he shot 53-year-old James Matthias of Springfield in December 2010 because his son had said Matthias abused him as a child.

But before Wilson was sentenced on Wednesday, his now-adult son told the court that his father's story about the abuse wasn't true.

The 43-year-old Wilson pleaded guilty in October to second-degree murder and armed criminal action.

Matthias was shot as he sat in a car outside Wilson's home while waiting for his stepson.
