Monday, December 12, 2011
A former Dent County sheriff’s deputy was charged Sunday with two felonies after officials say he killed two people and led officers on a high-speed chase ending with a shootout at Capitol Plaza Hotel in Jefferson City.
Cole County charged Marvin R. Rice with assault of a law enforcement officer and armed criminal action. Today, Dent County could charge him in the fatal shootings of his ex-wife and her current boyfriend as well as the kidnapping of his 2-year-old son.
Rice was in fair condition Sunday at University Hospital, but is under custody of the Cole County Sheriff’s Department, which is holding him without bond.
In the probable cause statement, Jefferson City police Det. Mark Edwards said the suspect fled into the hotel with officers pursuing and that Jefferson City police officer Curtis Bohanan fired at the suspect after the suspect shot at him. Gunfire was exchanged between Bohanan and the suspect, who was shot and seriously injured. No one else was injured.
The suspect drove to Jefferson City after fleeing Dent County, initially being pursued by the Dent County Sheriff’s Department, then the Missouri Highway Patrol. The Jefferson City Police Department and Cole County Sheriff’s Department joined the pursuit toward the end.
