Feds drop charges against ex-KC med school chief

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Federal prosecutors have dropped 24 charges against a former Kansas City medical school president who died last month in Florida.

Karen Pletz, formerly of Jefferson City, was president of Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences from 1995 until she was fired in December 2009 after a special panel uncovered signs of fraud going back at least seven years.

The 64-year-old's body was found early Nov. 22 in a condominium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Police said there were no signs of foul play, and a medical examiner was conducting an autopsy to determine how she died.

Pletz was facing 16 counts of stealing from the university, one count of attempting to interfere with the administration of internal revenue, three counts of making false statements on tax returns and four counts of money laundering.
