Autopsy on dog could determine if charges filed

MARBLE HILL, Mo. (AP) - Prosecutors in southeast Missouri are awaiting autopsy results on a pit bull before deciding whether to seek charges against the suspect who allegedly dragged and burned the dog.

Bollinger County Sheriff Leo McElrath told the Southeast Missourian (http://bit.ly/sSoxk4 ) he isn't sure when the results should arrive. Authorities have a suspect but have not made an arrest pending results of the autopsy.

The dog's charred body was found by a driver along a county road on Oct. 21. Authority say the dog's left side had been burned and mud and gravel were embedded in the right side.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is funding the autopsy, which is being performed in Florida.
