Tuesday's NHL Capsules

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Matt Martin scored his second game-winning goal in his three-year NHL career, and the New York Islanders shook off a slow start and routed the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-1 on Tuesday night.

John Tavares, Milan Jurcina, David Ullstrom and Matt Moulson - the NHL's first star of last week - also scored for New York. Ullstrom's goal was his first in the NHL. Al Montoya made 23 saves.

The Islanders are 4-1-2 in their past seven games.

Martin St. Louis gave Tampa Bay a 1-0 lead, but the Islanders led 3-1 before the first period ended. Mathieu Garon stopped 29 shots for the Lightning, who have lost five in a row.

BLUES 3, RED WINGS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - David Backes scored St. Louis' second straight power-play goal, and the Blues broke out of a 2-for-39 slump with the man advantage in a victory against Detroit.

Alex Steen had a power-play goal in the second period, and Brian Elliott made 27 saves for the Blues, 9-2-3 since coach Ken Hitchcock replaced the fired Davis Payne. The Blues also beat the Red Wings in Hitchcock's first game on Nov. 15.

St. Louis entered Tuesday as the NHL's worst with the man advantage - having scored eight goals in 87 chances.

Detroit's Jonathan Franzen scored for the third straight game and Danny Cleary made it a one-goal game with 1:20 to go.

JETS 2, BRUINS 1

WINNIPEG, Alberta (AP) - Ondrej Pavelec made 39 saves, and Bryan Little scored the go-ahead goal in the third period as Winnipeg beat Boston.

The Bruins lost in regulation for the first time since Oct. 29, ending a 15-game stretch in which they earned 29 of a possible 30 points.

The Jets (12-11-4) moved above .500 for the first time this season, and have won six of seven home games.

Little scored 94 seconds after Shawn Thornton tied the game for Boston.

The goal came 6 seconds after David Krejci drove Jets defenseman Mark Stuart into the end boards from behind.

Pavelec withstood a flurry of shots in the final minutes of the game to preserve the lead. Tuukka Rask made 33 saves for the Bruins.

DEVILS 3, MAPLE LEAFS 2, OT

TORONTO (AP) - David Clarkson scored twice, including the winning goal 2:40 into overtime to lift New Jersey over Toronto.

Ilya Kovalchuk also scored for the Devils, who got 31 saves from Martin Brodeur.

Phil Kessel netted his 17th goal for Toronto, and Matt Frattin also scored for the Leafs. James Reimer made 23 saves.

Kovalchuk and Clarkson scored power-play goals in the first period to give New Jersey a 2-0 lead.

BLUE JACKETS 3, CANADIENS 2, SO

MONTREAL (AP) - Rick Nash's shootout goal lifted Columbus over Montreal.

Curtis Sanford was perfect in the tiebreaker, turning aside David Desharnais, Max Pacioretty and Brian Gionta. Gionta scored a goal with 1:21 left in regulation to send the game to overtime.

Andrei Kostitsyn scored with 1.5 seconds left in the first to draw Montreal even at 1.

R.J. Umberger had a goal and an assist, and Vinny Prospal also scored for Columbus, which had lost three of four.

Sanford made 18 saves in his 10th straight start for the Blue Jackets.

Carey Price stopped 26 shots for Montreal, which returned home after a 1-1-1 West Coast trip.

Gionta, who missed half of the second period after he was cut on the face by Blue Jackets defenseman Marc Methot's skate, tapped home a puck in the crease after Tomas Plekanec's centering pass struck former Canadiens defenseman James Wisniewski in front.

DUCKS 3, KINGS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Bobby Ryan's awkward shot glanced off Drew Doughty's shin and past Jonathan Quick with 48.8 seconds to play, and Anaheim beat Los Angeles for the Ducks' first victory under new coach Bruce Boudreau.

Jonas Hiller made 37 saves for the Ducks, who won for just the fourth time in 22 games with a fortuitous bounce for Ryan.

Ryan and Corey Perry scored first-period goals for the Ducks, who have blown 2-0 leads in each of their first three games under Boudreau. Teemu Selanne added two assists for the Ducks, who finally got a late break.

Justin Williams ended a 17-game goal drought by scoring with 11:10 to play for the Kings, who beat their area rivals in back-to-back games in mid-November to kick off the annual Freeway Faceoff. Quick stopped 24 shots, and Slava Voynov also scored for Los Angeles, which hasn't scored more than two goals in six straight games.

WILD 2, SHARKS 1

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Mikko Koivu and Pierre-Marc Bouchard scored late in the first period and Matt Hackett made 34 saves to win in his NHL debut as Minnesota topped San Jose.

Hackett replaced Josh Harding 71 seconds in and helped the Wild win their fifth straight on the road and fifth overall. Minnesota won for the 12th time after giving up the first goal.

Joe Pavelski scored just 1:00 in for the Sharks, who have lost four of five.

Harding left with an apparent neck injury 11 seconds after allowing Pavelski's goal. He was hit in the face by teammate Nick Schultz, who was trying to block Pavelski from the net.

Koivu tied it with 2:19 left in the first period, and Bouchard's power-play goal with 12 seconds remaining in the frame gave Minnesota a 2-1 lead.

COYOTES 3, PREDATORS 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Keith Yandle scored with 1:45 remaining to give Phoenix a win against Nashville.

The Coyotes won their second straight game. The Predators have dropped six of eight.

Ray Whitney and Taylor Pyatt also scored for Phoenix. Jack Hillen and Shea Weber had the Predators' goals.

With the teams skating 4-on-4, Shane Doan fired a pass from the right circle to Yandle skating through the slot. Yandle corralled the puck and put it past goalie Pekka Rinne for his fourth of the season.

Nashville had tied it 2-2 at 12:53 of the third on Weber's goal. Whitney had given the Coyotes the lead 1:40 into the third.

Pyatt gave Phoenix a 1-0 lead just 9 seconds after the opening faceoff, but Hillen tied it with just 10.8 seconds left in the first period.

FLAMES 7, HURRICANES 6

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Brendan Morrison had two goals and two assists as Calgary edged Carolina.

Jarome Iginla had two goals and an assist in Calgary's highest scoring game of the season. Lee Stempniak scored and had an assist, and Rene Bourque and Mikael Backlund also scored.

Eric Staal scored twice for Carolina, and Jiri Tlusty scored the Hurricanes' first goal of the night on a penalty shot. Chad LaRose, Tuomo Ruutu and Tim Brent also scored.

The Flames are 4-1-1 in their last six games. The Hurricanes have lost seven straight (0-6-1).

CANUCKS 6, AVALANCHE 0

VANCOUVER (AP) - Daniel Sedin scored three times, Cory Schneider had 20 saves in relief of Roberto Luongo, and Vancouver beat Colorado.

Jannik Hansen had two goals for the Canucks, who sealed their seventh victory in eight games with four third-period goals in a span of 4 1/2 minutes. Alex Edler's power-play goal at 9:40 gave Vancouver a 6-0 lead.

Sedin gave Vancouver some breathing room in the third after Schneider came in for Luongo, who was felled by Gabriel Landeskog's slap shot in the second period.
