KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The mayor of Kansas City has proposed to state education officials that he take control of the troubled Kansas City School District.
Mayor Sly James said in a letter Thursday to state education Commissioner Chris Nicastro that he's proposing steps that would require legislative approval to allow mayoral control of the school district. In the letter, James asks for Nicastro's support of the plan. Nicastro's office did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
The Kansas City Star reports (http://bit.ly/vcDXXM ) that James is basing his recommendations on input from community leaders concerned about the district's pending loss of accreditation.
James' plan also calls for delaying the district's loss of accreditation until July and delaying school governance decisions until March so lawmakers can consider the issue.
