Search continues for man who disappeared in river

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) - State and local law enforcement officers are searching for a 57-year-old grandfather who disappeared when he was trying to cross a river in northwest Missouri.

The St. Joseph News-Press (http://bit.ly/omaWhG) reports the Agency man was trying to walk across the Platte River on Saturday with his two grandchildren during a fishing trip.

The Buchanan County Sheriff's Office got a call just after 5 p.m. Saturday that the man had stepped into a hole and did not resurface.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol's water patrol dragged the bottom of the river until 10 p.m. Saturday and resumed the effort Sunday morning.

Sheriff Mike Strong says some people threw the children a rope and helped them across the river.

He says the search for the grandfather has turned into a recovery effort.
