Johnson wins Barclays title

EDISON, N.J. (AP) - Dustin Johnson beat the rain and everyone else Saturday at The Barclays to win the opening FedEx Cup playoff event.

Johnson shot a 29 on the front nine of rain-softened Plainfield Country Club for the second straight day and closed with a 6-under 65 to pull away from mistake-prone Matt Kuchar (68) for a two-shot victory.

The Barclays was reduced to 54 holes because of Hurricane Irene, and there was as much drama in the sky as on the course. Kuchar started the third and final round with a one-shot lead. If the round could not be completed, the tournament would have reverted to 36 holes and Kuchar would have been declared the winner.

The rain came down hard right after Johnson holed a bunker shot for eagle on No. 4. But it held off just long enough for Johnson to collect his first win of the year and fifth of his career. He is the first player since Tiger Woods to go straight from college and win in each of his first four years on the PGA Tour.

Johnson, who finished at 19-under 194, wasn't the only big winner Saturday.

Ian Poulter birdied four of his last five holes for a 64, making him one of eight players who moved inside the top 100 in the FedEx Cup standings and advance to the second playoff event next week outside Boston.

William McGirt, the last of the 125 players who qualified for the playoffs, birdied the 17th hole that pushed him to No. 96. Padraig Harrington went from No. 124 to No. 80 with his tie for 13th. And then there was Ernie Els. He would have been eliminated had the tournament been cut short to 36 holes. Els had a 67 to move from 118th in the standings to No. 99.

Wie tied for lead

MIRABEL, Quebec - Defending champion Michelle Wie shot a 4-under 68 in the Canadian Women's Open for a share of the third-round lead with Ai Miyazato and Tiffany Joh.

The winner last year at St. Charles in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Wie is trying to become the first player to win the national championship two years in a row since Pat Bradley in 1985-86.

Joh had a 65, and Miyazato shot a 71 to match Wie at 12-under 204 at Hillsdale Golf Club.

Angela Stanford (66) and Brittany Lincicome (69) were a stroke back, and Cristie Kerr (69), Jiyai Shin (69), Na Yeon Choi (69), Becky Morgan (70) and Song-Hee Kim (71) followed at 10 under.

There was some doubt the final round can be completed before Hurricane Irene hits the area today. If the fourth round can't be completed, a three-way playoff will be held.

Foursome tops Champions Tour

SNOQUALMIE, Wash. - Mark Calcavecchia eagled the par-5 18th hole for a 5-under 67 and a share of the second-round lead in the Champions Tour's Boeing Classic.

Calcavecchia, winless in 30 career starts in two seasons on the 50-and-over tour, matched Kenny Perry (68), Jeff Sluman (70) and Russ Cochran (71) at 7 under at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge.

Bob Gilder (69), Chip Beck (69) and Chien Soon Lu (69) were 5 under.

Defending champion Bernhard Langer was 3 under after a 73.

U.S. Amateur

ERIN, Wis. (AP) - UCLA star Patrick Cantlay beat Texas A&M's Jordan Russell 4 and 3 to advance to the U.S. Amateur championship match at Erin Hills.

Cantlay will face Kelly Kraft in the 36-hole final. Kraft, coming off his final season at SMU, beat England's Jack Senior 3 and 2.

Johnnie Walker Championship

GLENEAGLES, Scotland (AP) - England's Mark Foster shot a 4-under 68 for a share of the third-round lead with Spain's Ignacio Garrido in the Johnnie Walker Championship.

Garrido had a 69 to match Foster at 11-under 205.
