Thursday's American League Capsules

NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Yankees became the first team in major league history to hit three grand slams in a game, with Robinson Cano, Russell Martin and Curtis Granderson connecting Thursday in a wet, wild 22-9 romp over the Oakland Athletics.

In nearly a century of storied slugging, the Bronx Bombers never enjoyed a day like this.

On a dreary afternoon, some fans headed home with the Yankees trailing 7-1 after three innings and rain still falling in a game that began after an 89-minute delay.

Turns out they missed the Yankees coming home - over and over and over.

Cano began the barrage with his slam in the fifth off starter Rich Harden, making it 7-6. Martin connected in the sixth off Fautino De Los Santos (2-1) for a 10-7 lead. Granderson took his turn in eighth, launching a two-out drive off Bruce Billings.

Martin homered twice and doubled, setting career highs with five hits and six RBIs. Cano drove in five runs as the Yankees pulled off their biggest comeback win since 2006 and avoided a three-game sweep.

New York came to bat a startling 17 times with the bases loaded - Derek Jeter alone got four tries. He grounded out twice, struck out and walked in those spots.

Jeter did get three hits and briefly boosted his average to .300. Granderson's slam gave him 103 RBIs. The Yankees had hit two slams in a game three times, but never at home.

Boone Logan (4-2) got the win.

Red Sox 6, Rangers 0

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Adrian Gonzalez homered twice to give him five in four games and Andrew Miller pitched three-hit ball in a spot start as Boston beat Texas again.

Miller threw 6 1/3 impressive innings and the Red Sox took the final three matchups in a four-game series between AL division leaders.

Gonzalez hit a solo shot in the first inning and a two-run drive in the third off Alexi Ogando (12-6), giving him homers on three consecutive swings - including one in the eighth inning Wednesday night.

Gonzalez, who had his 13th career multihomer game, had gone 84 at-bats without a long ball before homering in the first inning Tuesday night.

David Ortiz and Jarrod Saltalamacchia also connected for the Red Sox, who have won six of eight and remain one game ahead of New York in the AL East. Miller (6-1) struck out six and walked two in his 10th start of the season.

Texas won 4-0 in the series opener, but Boston outscored the Rangers 30-7 in the final three games.

The Rangers, who have dropped five of six, held a seven-game lead in the AL West over the Los Angeles Angels on Aug. 17. That margin has shrunk to two entering Friday night's opener of a three-games series between the teams in Texas.

Tigers 2, Rays 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Doug Fister allowed five hits over seven scoreless innings, Austin Jackson homered and the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers beat Tampa Bay.

Fister (6-13) struck out five. The right-hander, acquired in a six-player trade with Seattle on July 30, is 3-1 in five starts with the Tigers.

Jackson hit a leadoff homer in the first and made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

The Tigers took three of four from Tampa Bay and have won 16 of their last 25 road games.

Jeremy Hellickson (11-9) became the first Rays pitcher to strike out four batters in an inning. He gave up two runs and six hits in seven innings.

Jose Valverde pitched the ninth to complete a seven-hitter and pick up his 38th save in as many chances this season.

Orioles 6, Twins 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Mark Reynolds hit a three-run homer and Jo Jo Reyes went six strong innings to lead Baltimore over Minnesota for its first four-game winning streak since early June.

Vladimir Guerrero had two hits for the Orioles, who swept the Twins at home in a four-game series for the first time.

Reyes (7-10) allowed one run and five hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Craig Tatum added a two-run double for the Orioles.

Anthony Swarzak (3-4) gave up five runs and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings after Minnesota left-hander Francisco Liriano left with a strained shoulder after two innings.

Joe Mauer also missed his second straight game for the injury-ravaged Twins, with a stiff neck keeping him out.

Royals 9, Blue Jays 6

TORONTO (AP) - Jeff Francis pitched six-plus innings to win for the first time since July 29 and Melky Cabrera homered to lead Kansas City past Toronto.

Billy Butler went 4 for 5 with two RBIs and scored twice as the Royals won their first series since taking two of three against Baltimore from Aug. 2-4. It was Kansas City's first series victory in Toronto since August 2002.

Butler went 8 for 15 with five extra-base hits to help the Royals win twice in the three-game set.

J.P. Arencibia and Edwin Encarnacion homered for the Blue Jays.

Francis (5-14) came in 0-3 with an 8.27 ERA in his past four outings but was solid in his first career start in Canada. The left-hander, born in Vancouver, British Columbia, improved to 3-0 with a 2.37 ERA in three career starts against Toronto.

Francis, who won just one of his previous nine decisions, gave up two runs and six hits.

Brett Cecil (4-7) lost his third straight decision, allowing five runs in 6 1/3 innings.
