Woman found hanged in Franklin Co. jail

UNION, Mo. (AP) — An autopsy is planned after a female inmate of the Franklin County jail in eastern Missouri was found hanged in her cell.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 32-year-old Holly Garris was unresponsive when jail employees found her Saturday night with a sheet around her neck and the sheet tied to a metal cover in the ceiling.

Garris was being held on drug-related charges, and had been in the jail since Aug. 11. Sheriff Gary Toelke says she was in a cell by herself. Foul play was not suspected. Authorities believe she killed herself, even though she had given no indication of being suicidal.
