Foreign students protesting in Pa. reject US trip

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Leaders of foreign students who walked off their jobs in protest at a Pennsylvania plant that serves The Hershey Co. chocolate manufacturer say they’re not interested in a proposal to send them on a trip to see some of the United States’ cultural and historical landmarks.
Companies involved in employing the students formulated the plan for the trip Friday.
Student leaders say accepting the proposal would make it appear their dramatic job action at a Hershey vendor company this week was simply motivated by a desire to get a vacation. They say they’re determined to force the companies to address their other concerns about working conditions inside the distribution facility where they’ve been getting paid about $8 an hour.
Some of the companies involved are based in Westerville, Ohio; Lemoyne, Pa., and New Orleans.
