Officials: Sewer contract confusing

A nearly 25-year-old agreement is causing some confusion in City Hall.

The Jefferson City finance committee has requested a full report and history on an agreement with the town of St. Martins concerning the city sewer system and applicable rates.

The agreement, which dates back to 1989, essentially gives a portion of the St. Martins sewer system to Jefferson City, and requires Jefferson City to maintain the entire system and give St. Martins residents the same sewer rates as Jefferson City residents.

Committee chairman and Second Ward Councilman Rich Koon said, aside from the St. Martins agreement, people who live outside of Jefferson City limits and are in the sewer system pay three times the sewer rate of Jefferson City and St. Martins residents.

Thank you Mr Koon for looking into this. I have always wondered why my sewer bill is so high. I have called and asked to be told that is just the way it is. I live in the county but have city sewer. I pay $15. a month for water but $45. for sewer. Also we dont get to vote on rate changes because only the city got to vote.

If Jeff City would just annex St. Martins, then the residents would get to vote. You know it is going to happen, so Jeff City just needs to do it. Annex St. Martins!

if the question you are asking is about annexation - ultimately, the answer is no. For me to vote for any annexation requires EVERY ADULT in the area to agree to it. If not, my vote is no. All must be in agreement for me to vote for it. Typiclally, there are reasons people choose to live in the county and annexation may negate those reasons.
