China announces measures to support HK economy

HONG KONG (AP) - The official widely expected to be China's next premier has announced measures to support Hong Kong's economy.

Vice Premier Li Keqiang said Wednesday during a visit to Hong Kong that China's government would expand access for Hong Kong companies to the mainland's service sector.

Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China with its own political and financial system.

He also said China would help Hong Kong beef up its status as an international financial center and promote it as a center for trading in yuan, China's currency.

Li's visit comes as Hong Kong's government is wrestling over growing public anger from residents suffering from surging property prices and widening inequality.
