Our Opinion: School safety reminders for motorists

Area motorists are encountering something they haven't seen for a while.

No, the road construction season hasn't ended. A new school year has begun.

Some schools began classes today and other will resume in coming weeks.

The noticeable difference for motorists is children will be walking and riding bicycles to and from school, traffic will increase, crossing guards will be on duty and school zone signals will be activated.

Each year, we remind motorists to be cautious and alert. Although it may seem redundant, we cannot overemphasize that the safety of children depends on motorists who obey the laws, remain patient and avoid distractions.

Safe Kids USA offers these back-toschool safety reminders for motorists:

• Slow down and be especially alert in the residential neighborhoods and school zones.

• Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.

• Observe all laws concerning school buses, school zones and crossing guards.

• Reduce any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.

Reminders for students include:

• Cross the street with an adult until at least 10 years old.

• Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.

• Never run out into the streets or cross in between parked cars.

• Always walk in front of the bus where the driver can see you.

A new school year typically brings excitement and anticipation for students. But it also can create delays for motorists who do not plan ahead and factor in extra driving time.

Attentive motorists play an important role in school safety, not only in coming weeks, but throughout the school year.
