Petition planned to limit adult stores
Friday, August 12, 2011
Opponents of a local business are beginning a petition process in an attempt to prevent similar operations from moving into the city.
Assistant city attorney Drew Hilpert said resident Jan Kruse has decided to begin a petition to strictly define pornography and attempt to further restrict how adult businesses are classified.

you mean to define other than what the supreme court ruled what p*rn was. (wow you can post it on the paper not say it here) typical Jefferson city. always in their own little world

Sorry about that but it's more of an Internet thing. Mass automated posts from China don't use the restricted word to talk about relevant issues like you do, so the filter is overly restrictive in an attempt to erect various roadblocks to that. Live participants hopefully know how to work around that when they need to discuss issues. Granted, that's far from ideal and it's a real inconvenience, but the positive side is that, overall, the filter has reduced mass auto posts. At the moment. Knock wood.
JCLifer 1 year, 9 months ago
Why would there be mas automated posts from China to a site that requires pre-registrtation and using an approved logon and password?
online_editor 1 year, 9 months ago
Spammers are very ingenuous; that alone does not stop them because they can write scripts to automate almost anything. And it's impossible to tell where they're originating from, because they find insecure servers to use as relays. Thus, the only visible source often indicates it's originating from a Far East country.

Excellent! This has inspired me to push forward with my petition as well. I'm going to petition to limit the number of churches allowed in the city.
sillyrabbit 1 year, 9 months ago
The simple fact remains that churches have caused a lot more trouble in the world than adult businesses.
tonto 1 year, 9 months ago
Two facts. First: sillyrabbit is right. Adult businesses have never launched Crusades nor have they ever attempted to rid their countries of one or more ethnic or religious groups of people. Only so-called religious people have done that. Second: for most of the world and for most of recorded history, religion and prostitution were connected or even combined.

and some people have misused sex, but that doesn't make all of us sex addicts.

Graceful, the point of my post was that if it's fair for these people to force their judgement on everyone else, then its just as fair for me to force mine. I'm an atheist, but I still believe everyone is entitled to their religion, their religious stores and their churches. Its when people start trying to force everyone else to bend to their moralistic views that I have a major problem.
TraceyT 1 year, 9 months ago
Actually, it's not supposed to be a democracy. This country was set up to be a constitutional republic NOT a democracy. The most significant difference between the two is that in a democracy it is legitimate for the majority, whether it is a religous majority or a non-religous majority, to force their will on the entire populace, while in a constitutional republic the majority is not allowed to force its will on others when it conflicts with the constitution. Since our constitution protects (recognizes) free speech, freedom of (and from) religion, and the many other individual freedoms, it makes it a bit more difficult to reasonably claim the right to dictate the private behaviour of others.

You seem to be kind of jaded. All I want is equality and open mindedness. I'm a liberal too, and I can say I don't want to suppress or eradicate anything. I just wish people could learn to live and let live.
Spider19811 1 year, 9 months ago
I disagree with those accusations. There is obviously no seeing eye to eye on this one, and it's straying from the original topic, so I think I've said all there is for me to say.

Okay - an Italian city or meat sausage don't apply here so you must mean BALONEY. I do not presume to know if you intentionally use 'bologna' or what the purpose is. If it is an oversight - I am now certain you are informed.

I am so sick of this of this women, if she put forth her time and energy on something that mattered like health care, taxes, gas prices, then she would deserve space in the news. I don't need someone telling me where I can shop.
readmore 1 year, 9 months ago
yeah, she's obnoxious. some people have too much time on their hands. especially religious zealots who think they have all the answers. this is my final post. i have better things to do. i'm sure people will be celebrating that they don't have to read my liberal, atheist bias on all this stupid nonsense anymore. bye

does this person own a business or run a church here in town we can picket in front of?
evenkeel 1 year, 9 months ago
I am so sick of these posters who are animated enough to post about the importance of unfettered access to lubricants and sex gadgets and yet are somnolent about a Federal Government that runs up $1.2 trillion yearly deficits and $15 trillion debts.
Is your passion on this issue fueled by a hostility towards Christians who are exercising their rights to shape the community as they see fit?
Last time I looked at the posts from an earlier adult store article there were many posts with disparaging comments about the appearance of the picketers and tasteless speculation about their sex lives. Now I see that churches have become the target.
Can't you disagree without being disagreeable?
JCLifer 1 year, 9 months ago
This issue has nothing to do with churches. Not sure why churches and religion are being brough into this discussion.
My religion teaches that sexual satisfaction with my partner is a gift from God, and that God gave us sex as a gift to enjoy our lives on this planet.
JCLifer 1 year, 9 months ago
If I want to purchase lubricants, lingerie, and other adult aids, that is my business, and it is also Christian to support my God-given gift. Please don't listen to these other religious fanatics. They are as loopy as the Baptists who demonstrate and the funerals and say that God hates homosexuals. They are not true Christians because they are full of hatred, and do not represent love for each other and loving relationships.
gzc721 1 year, 9 months ago
Now as according to your post you don't understand why religion and churches are being brought in I don't understand why you are singling out a religion. I happen to have been born, bred, and raised Baptist and I DO NOT think in those terms. So please don't lump everyone together!
JCLifer 1 year, 9 months ago
I know several Baptists who enjoy sex aids and lubricants.

I think your religion is right.

Purchases provide taxable income and generate sales tax revenue in the process reducing government deficient. Besides, I like Somnolent’s music, especially “Wooden Winged” and “With You.” Please use a different adjective.

I think it is high time to limit the number of bars and payday loan businesses in this city. These adult businesses are covered under this law because only 21 and older can go to bars, and only adults are able to obtain payday loans.
We need to pass a law to limit all kinds of business in Jefferson City. Adult businesses are bad, as are child businesses. In this economy, we should not have all these businesses trying to get money out of our town's citizens who are being victimized by these businesses.
Jefferson City leaders need to start doing a better job of protecting innocent citizens from businesses. That is why we have government in the first place. Do your job, city hall!

What about non-Christians who are excersizing their rights? We have just as much right to decide how we want our community as you. The difference is, YOU are trying to take options away from us. We're not asking you to shut down Christian bookstores, why should access to things we use for our (100% legal) recreational activities be restricted? This has been said over and over again but obviously it's not sunk in - if you don't like the store, if you don't agree with its purpose, don't shop there.
rose 1 year, 9 months ago
It needs to be labeled Adult Novelty Shop so people know what it is. This needs to be put under the name. They need to not hide what they are selling. Then people can go in knowing what is in it. It appears they are ashamed at what they are selling because rather than really advertising it by identifying it, they hide under a soft name. If Jefferson City is really ready for something like this, They should not dance around restrictions and really let people know who they are. I don't really think they are necessary because the internet has all a person would really need. I believe these types of stores should be in an area of their own and not with other stores. It will be interesting to see how many people sign the petition if there is one. I bet it will be more than you can imagine. People want to know what they are walking into.
JCLifer 1 year, 9 months ago
Yes, Government must get bigger and more intrusive to protect the poor victim residents who are incapable of protecting themselves from evil stores that promote peoples' love for each other. Think of the horrors of all the residents who walk into the place and are traumatized by things that promote love and togetherness. We cannot have these evil businesses trying to lure unsuspecting people in with the intention of helping them to love their partner more.
bluesfan13 1 year, 9 months ago
So, every store needs to post what they sell on the outside of their building under their name? Or just the ones you object to? I would think running radio advertisements, giving their location, etc. is letting people know who they are. ...and you really think people would be scarred for life if they accidentally walked in to an "adult novelty shop"?
TraceyT 1 year, 9 months ago
WalMart, Dairy Queen, and Break Time should also quit hiding what they are selling. Makes sense, right Rose? Obviously, they are showing the name of the store, which is a corporate brand name and is not by any stretch of the imagination an indication of "shame" or an attempt at hiding under a "soft name". bluesfan has already pointed out the steps they are taking to make sure people know what they are selling, so I won't repeat it here.
TraceyT 1 year, 9 months ago
I would be happy to sign the petition, and I agree that the number of willing would be more than most people can imagine. Oh, wait. You were talking about Jan's petition, while I was thinking about Spider's.
JCMOYouthWatch 1 year, 9 months ago
the sign that clearly" reads "must be 18 to enter should be enough to give someone a hint..it either means they are selling tobacco or adult novelty items. What do you do when you go to Hastings when the category is 18 and over? it is simple, you avoid it if you do not want to look.
local4 1 year, 9 months ago
They are trying to make it tasteful for the children in the community. Why would we want to order from the internet and take the chance of our card number being stolen and having to pay shipping and handling when we can walk right in and support our local town!
whatif 1 year, 9 months ago
I have no problem with people who want to follow the restrictions/limitations and beliefs of any particular religion --- what I have a problem with is when they decide to demand that the rest of us follow those same doctrines/dogmas or whatever you want to call it. After all, God granted us free will -- and I believe the reason being is so that we can learn for ourselves what is good and what is bad in our own way and through this process we learn the truth -- to be loving and accepting individuals. So that being said so long as I am not killing, hurting, abusing, demeaning or creating wars - or anything that is harmful to any living breathing soul, I AM GOOD.
TraceyT 1 year, 9 months ago
whatif, you have made a good point. The God of the Bible respects free will. According to the Bible, Jesus came and died to give us the ability to CHOOSE to be reconciled to God. He didn't say "everybody is going to heaven, whether you want to or not." It's just unfortunate that most christians haven't learned to respect free will and prefer to force us to "do the right thing". Not very Godly (like God), is it?

I agree. I think we should all get together and discuss this over a meal. ding dong Oop! There's the pizza boy. Yes, we ordered the LARGE pepperoni...

So, if I want to shop at Cirilla's I will do just that and not allow anybody to dictate what is good and what is bad for me. Sorry these protesters don't have a life of their own... who knows if they weren't so uptight about what everybody else is doing, they might even enjoy theirs. I believe it would be more beneficial if they volunteered their time in a way that would really make a difference..... but demanding to place restrictions on others -- seriously????
CGN45 1 year, 9 months ago
Why is she supporting business at Cirilla's by trying to prevent competing stores from opening? Is this part of a plan to keep the number of stores at one to maximize revenue at a single source location? Let’s allow some reasonable amount of competition to keep our costs reasonable.

THATS IT......IM going to start a petition to limit the number of petitions allowed in this city. there is just TOO many to do anyone any good and i think it high time we stepped in!
Again the people of this town make another revolution down in this giant toilet bowl of a city.

I find it convenient that I can purchase (insert naughy item) locally rather than drive all the way to columbia. Thank (insert supreme being) Menards is right down the road TOO! I can make one trip for (insert battery size) & (insert lubricant) ie: Penzoil, Mobile 1.
Since we're petitioning, can we get a petition started that Girl Scouts shouldn't sell cookies because they disrupt sales and distribution of other cookie vendors, and they're a pain to deal with when all I want to do is go to the store and buy my (insert favorite liqour). And while we're at it, a petition for all these kids with their loud music, and baggy pants, and ball caps with flat bills, with out of state sports teams.

I have AOL. There is a block for local news. Everytime I go to check it, all there is is the comments to the stories. My question is why aren't there headlines for local news and why is it filled up with comments to various articles? I know this is off the subject, but I really don't care about the comments. I just want to read the local headlines and skip all the comments. Perhaps I should just call the paper, but they're not open right now. Rick online editor, can you answer my question? I have emailed it to the newstribune, but have not received an answer. What's up? Thanks if you answer me.
