Cards place Lynn on D.L.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Cardinals rookie right-hander Lance Lynn has been put on the 15-day disabled list, a day after injuring his left side making a pitch, and could miss the rest of the season.

Outfielder Matt Holliday was scratched from the St. Louis lineup Wednesday night against the Milwaukee Brewers after injuring his back in the weight room. Manager Tony La Russa overhauled the card, moving David Freese to Holliday's cleanup spot and Allen Craig from second to fifth and inserting Corey Patterson at right batting second and Jon Jay in center batting eighth.

General manager John Mozeliak termed the injury as "very mild" and said Holliday was day to day. Holliday was receiving treatment and wasn't available to talk before the game.

"We'll see how he feels tomorrow," Mozeliak said. "We don't envision it being major."

Craig was activated from the 15-day disabled list after recovering from a fractured knee cap. He was to start in right field and bat second.

St. Louis temporarily went with an 11-man pitching staff. The Cardinals had a full roster after catcher Yadier Molina returned from a five-game suspension that resulted from his spittle-laced tirade last week.

Manager Tony La Russa said the team would add another arm.

"The point is you've got to go to 12 pitchers," La Russa said, "whether it's tomorrow or soon after."

Lynn had developed into one of the team's consistent setup men and worked 1 2-3 hitless innings with three strikeouts before being hurt on a full-count walk against George Kottaras in the ninth inning of a 5-3, 10-inning loss. He's 1-1 with a 3.12 ERA in 18 games, all but two of them in relief.

La Russa estimated the pitcher would be sidelined at least three weeks and as many as six weeks.

Craig was batting .336 with starts at second base, third base, left field and right field, but missed 54 games after hurting his right knee on June 7. He batted a combined .244 with a home run and six RBI in 12 injury rehab games with Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis.
