JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri Treasurer Clint Zweifel is warning the public about a scam involving unclaimed property.
Zweifel says emails have been sent to people nationwide from someone claiming to be the director of a real organization called the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators.
Recipients are told they're entitled to about $2.8 million in unclaimed property but must provide a full name, address, telephone number, age and occupation. People who respond are directed to call an attorney in the United Kingdom. They're asked for financial information and charged a high fee for the call to the attorney.
Zweifel says the email is an attempt to steal personal information. He says that state treasurers and administrators are responsible for contacting people about unclaimed property and that the national trade group never does.
