Missouri group to stop filtering LGBT materials

A Missouri consortium that provides Internet access and filtering software to 100 school districts in the state says it will no longer filter nonsexual content aimed at lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender communities.

The Missouri Research & Education Network, or MOREnet, said Friday it was making the change after receiving a letter from the American Civil Liberties Union and Feedom to Read Foundation.

The groups told MOREnet it was illegally censoring LGBT-related websites through its software while allowing access to websites that condemn homosexuality or oppose LGBT legal protections.

MOREnet is associated with the University of Missouri. The group said it would no longer activate the "Alternative Lifestyles" filter on its software, though it will continue to block sexually explicit content.
