Vogel earns top academic awards

Brent Vogel of the University of Central Missouri has been named the NCAA Division II Track and Field Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Vogel (Helias High School) earned the award for both the indoor and outdoor seasons. He won the Division II decathlon title and was the runner-up in the indoor heptathlon. Vogel, who will be a senior, is majoring in biology with a 3.76 GPA.

The award was announced Thursday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The award is determined from athletes who earned All-Academic status and placed highest in the most recent NCAA Championships. Separate awards are given to track athletes for the indoor and outdoor seasons.
