Missouri baking in triple-digit heat, again

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The summer of 2011 is keeping a sizzling grip on Missouri.

In Kansas City, where Tuesday’s high temperature was expected to hit 106, leaders urged residents to take caution with outdoor activity. The metro area was under a heat warning, and residents without air conditioning or fans were urged to head to shelters. St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay urged people to check air conditioners of elderly neighbors.

In southwest Missouri, triple-digit temperatures were drying out fields and diminishing hay stocks. The Springfield News-Leader reports (http://bit.ly/qB8LUY ) water supplies in creeks and wells are falling and grass is drying up.

Missouri transportation officials say prolonged heat has led to more pavement buckling. No roads have been closed, but warning signs have been placed to alert about bumps until they can be fixed.
