Mo. revenue department warns of tax refund scam

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Missouri Department of Revenue says taxpayers should beware of anyone asking for their credit card or debit card number to give them a tax refund.

The agency says a citizen recently reported getting a call from someone claiming to be a state official. The caller requested a credit card number and expiration date, saying he needed them to pay what he called an income tax “rebate.”

Missouri Revenue Director Alana Barragan-Scott says the agency never asks for a credit card number to process a tax refund.

Taxpayers with questions about refunds can call the Department of Revenue at 573-751-3505.
